OAKWELL HALL, BATLEY, WEST YORKSHIRE

Drawing by Jules

BBC drama 'Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell'

 — partly shot at Oakwell Hall

Yorkshire's Oakwell Hall manor house which is owned by Kirklees council is an Elizabethan building of major historic importance. It is  a Grade I* listed building with links to the Bronte family.

Name: Oakwell Hall
Locality: Nutter Lane, Birstall, Batley WF17 9LG
Built: 1583 (or there abouts)
Owner: Kirklees Council
Grade I
Website: KMC

Oakwell Hall which is a local to me, seems to be having a renaissance period at the moment, 'Shirley' a gorgeous house linked to the Bronte Sisters, with tales of crisis apparition. The house has been relatively ignored by 'ghost hunters', but thats changed somehow ?

Classified as a Crisis Apparition: Possible Veridical Haunting (Hallucination)

Oakwell Hall in Batley, West Yorkshire is a local haunt of mine 'so to speak' it has a famous legend.  The ghost of William Batt, a former owner of  Oakwell Hall in 1684 the ghost story comes from the Victorian writer Mrs Gaskell in her "Life of Charlotte Bronte".

"Captain Batt was believed to be far away; his family was at Oakwell; when in the dusk on winter evening, he came stalking along the lane, through the hall and up the stairs, into his own room, where he vanished. He has been killed in duel in London that very same afternoon of December 9th 1684."

A classic crisis apparition sighting, there is a legend that he left a bloody footprint behind in a bedroom, I remember seeing a dark stain on the floorboards many years ago but I can't remember which room I saw it in. Maybe it was just my young imagination.

A more modern witness saw children playing in the rear garden the children were wearing  period costume they ran off into a dead end part of the garden totally vanishing into thin air and never to be found outside nor inside the hall.

This is the back garden where the small children in period costume were seen by two visitors, only to just run off into a dead end disappear into thin air.

William Batt
Location: Birstall - Oakwell Hall
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 09 December 1684 (Crisis Manifestation), other sighting in 1987
Further Comments: William's family saw him enter the hall on 09 December (some sources say Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, according to other accounts); they were surprised as they thought he was in London at the time. However, William suddenly disappeared and the following day the family discovered he had been killed in London around the time of his mysterious appearance. A woman wearing a Tudor dress was spotted hear in 1987 by an employee. The ghost stood by a window for several minutes before disappearing.

THE JAIL WHERE EVEN THE GHOSTS CAN'T LEAVE - Armley Jail, Leeds, West Yorkshire

ARMLEY JAIL, LEEDS

Name: Armley prison
Locality: 2 Gloucester Terrace Stanningley Road Leeds West Yorkshire LS12 2TJ
Built: 1847
Owner: Crown Property
Grade II*
Website: Justice.gov

As Jules walks around the prison's exterior walls and down its long dark internal corridors she is filled with trepidation, it's a frightening place day and night especially walking past the old (long drop) topping shed and old graveyard area, She has witnessed what she will call 'strange oddities' within this establishment, which she can't note as paranormal because of possible misinterpretations. Armley jail is still a working prison, permission to visit in a paranormal capacity will never be allowed unless it closes maybe.

In the beginning part of this post, what you will read is information that is word of mouth first hand from staff and prisoners, emailed to Jules and told to Jules in person. Extra information is written thanks to author Stephen Wade (of Haunting's in Yorkshire books).

Armley Jail hauntings
Armley Jail

Since I last updated this blog, more strange occurrences have taken place but, I am not at liberty to mention or describe what they are at this present moment in time.

Update: October 18th 2014

Written by an undisclosed prisoner (#2)

Hi there
Hope this is of some use to you.
START
I’ve been in Armley jail a few times. The windows on D Wing used to blow open by themselves, however I always thought it was the wind and as it always seemed windy it never bothered me until earlier this year. I never, ever, believed in ghosts until I found myself back in Armley on remand. I was in the first night centre in my cell (alone) when I spotted what looked like a small torchlight on the wall which seemed to become larger. Within moments I felt someone sit on the end of my bed. I looked up to see the top half of a male, about thirty years old. I could not see his legs. He was shirtless and didn’t look like a person from the olden days… I freaked out and muttered ‘are you going to hurt me?’.

‘Am I f**k’ he replied and disappeared. The torch light on the wall appeared to move further away.

All that night I was scared. Every time I nodded off to sleep, I would be grabbed and touched, and it felt like someone was trying to climb in to the bed with me, even though I put the light on. In the end I tried to convince myself I was crazy and turned the light out, but there was still a dot of light on the wall which seemed to move around the cell.

I wasn’t taking drugs or anything, and never have, but it scared the life out of me. I never, ever, even believed in ghosts up until then but, yep, Armley is very haunted and scary. I’ve never mentioned this to anyone, not even my mum - they would laugh at me and call me crazy, but I know I know what happened…

END

I also received an account from a former worker a few years ago which is here.

“I used to work nights at HMP Armley, in the segragation block, which used to be the old "death cells" where the prisoners were brought prior to execution, many strange events happened there, gates closing, and sometimes seeing prison officers from the past, in victorian uniforms, and hearing rattling chains tapping the metal security gates. The two new wings which have been built are built over the graves of prisoners hung at Armley, (I remember them been built, as the body's of the dead had to be dug up prior to the new wings been built) the wings which were built over the graves are reportedly the most haunted area's of the prison, with many sightings.”

With thanks to ParanormalDatabase.com for kindly providing me with the above material.

I work at HMP Leeds and confirm that these stories are accurate and true. a note to be added is the odd happenings in the north turret to the old gate lodge. footsteps can be heard within upon the stairs with no person to ommit them and several members of staff have felt themselves pushed from behind on the stairs, many blame the bust of a officer made by a ex prisoner (believed to be haunted) that resides on the top floor and like the mona lisa, its eyes seems to follow you providing a cold chill everytime down your neck.

I can't recollect a bust in the north turret (J).

First hand eye-witness accounts at Armley Jail, Leeds )

Recent sightings and news: Female wearing an old military style uniform carrying a baby, figure seen in the gym, just a pair of feet wearing striped pumps walking down stairs, man in a white tee shirt in the early hours of the morning.

Built in 1847 this Victorian Jail at Armley in Leeds, is reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in West Yorkshire and it has an abundance of paranormal activity both day and night, including full 'solid' apparitions appearing almost daily! There have been some  major reports just recently, the ones mentioned here are only the tip of the iceberg. Many full apparitions have been seen  most days and nights here mostly by staff, the most recent shade is that of an officer wearing a barathea, which is a 'number one' uniform usually only worn on special occasions; the witness who saw the ghost noted that as he walked passed it it didn't communicate, he also noticed its shoes were very highly polished and it wore a blue shirt, modern day guards wear white shirts and the figure walked straight though the old gate wall in broad daylight, frightening the witness so much he had to radio the CCTV control room, but it wasn't caught on camera. Maybe there is some sort of time anomaly manifesting itself here for some reason.

There has been movement of furniture in cells too which has also been witnessed by prisoners. Doors and windows open and close by themselves usually in-front of peoples eyes, mostly at night.  In August 2008 someone saw a figure of a man wearing an old-style officers cap he was smoking a cigarette outside the old gate, this figure has also been seen throughout different parts of the jail by three other independent witnesses. Fleeting shadows are seen regulary on the landings at night, sometimes figures are seen prompting a full head count of prisoners.  Areas had to be blessed, some say it was excorcised by a nun to clear the atmosphere.

Very recently someone saw a pair of legs walking past a main area door, just recently just a pair  of legs were seen again walking in-front of someone up a flight of stairs around the old part of the building; other people claim to have seen the top half of this figure. Apparently there have been some major renovation to one of the wings, people are saying that this has opened up 'something weird' and is causing a plethora of experiences daily, even major sceptics who scoff at the idea of ghosts have changed their views about the place!
Armley jail is still a working jail, no paranormal investigator would ever get permission to investigate it, so it's only down to these unique eye-witness accounts by staff and prisoners who make note of their experiences before they are forgotten about that you are reading this.

There has also been knockings on doors when there is no one there. Two admin staff  saw an apparition at the same time in broad daylight outside whilst eating their sandwiches, the figure just vanished into thin air, the ghost of Charlie Peace has been blamed for sightings around the admin block, Charlie was hung by the long drop (rope) at the jail. Other witnesses have seen a man with sucken eyes and a protruding jawline, a good description of what Charlie looked like from photographs.

Prison officers have also seen a ghostly soldier who was known to have murdered his partner Anne Mayne by slitting her throat and he was subsequently hung by Albert Pierrepoint in 1919. There is historical reference to a  soldier who killed his partner after finding her in bed with another man, at his trial he repeated the words 'she is a Jezebel' (slut).  A former prisoner heard the same words whispered into his ear.

Ghosts are seen walking though walls in certain parts of the jail, a prisoner who took his own life down the segregation block was seen again the next night walking through the wall to his old cell, frightening a member of staff so much they quit their post! The ghost of a recently passed guard has recently been seen in broad daylight. Sounds of objects being thrown around empty rooms is a common occurence

Oppression is felt around the old topping shed, where prisoners where once hanged and guards have heard footsteps following them and key-chains rattling when there is no one else about. The Grey Lady a ghost of a female guard haunts the wings and chapel, wearing period uniform, she is thought to have died there back in the 1800's.

Workmen are still uncovering wooden coffins to this day. Prisoners who were hung at the jail were actually buried within walls of the jail. The new E and F wings are  actually built on the top of the graveyard.

Written by former prisoner #1

In 2003 I was a prisoner in HMP Leeds (Armley) following an incident with a bullying prisoner , I was moved to a cell on the 5s landing of F wing . E & F wings are relatively new wings built on the old graveyard .

The previous occupants of this particular cell had ransacked it completely preferring to spend time "down the block" rather than spend another night in the haunted cell. I was alone in the cell & for the first few hours devised a way to connect the TV to the
wall mounted aerial socket , I was able eventually to devise a way by placing the TV on top of a folded prison mattress and leaning it slightly backwards with a bolt from the broken table joining the TV to the aerial socket.

I fell asleep some time during "the bill" . I awoke suddenly in darkness the TV set had fallen over and was lying face down emitting the white noise of a TV without aerial. I had chosen to make my bed on the floor , I was suddenly aware of a presence, which as I recollect makes the hairs on the back of my neck bristle .

A few feet away I could make out the shape of a man , I was gripped with a kind of terror that’s hard to describe . The weirdest thing was that only his upper body shoulders & head were visible above the floor. With my heart in my mouth I watched as he just disappeared through the wall .

Only a moment later I heard a shriek from the next cell. Trembling , I stood up & turned on the light , the electrics in the cell tripped out , the TV went silent and all I could hear was my own heartbeat . For an hour or 2 I just laid on the floor , it was July & came light early . I fell asleep , but was woken up by two burley screws who said "get your kit" your out of here ,I grabbed the few things I had a pillow a blanket & some tea bags & was out onto the landing in no time . After that I was padded up on the 3s landing with a number of prisoners , usually only for a few days as they were regularly shipped out to other prisons .

Only once did anyone acknowledge what I was saying about my experience , but most nights there were  screams from upstairs . I was serving a four month sentence which quickly passed . I took a walk around the perimeter after I was released the daunting Victorian structure , I vowed never to return . I do occasionally travel to Leeds , & when I do the dark battlements of Leeds castle always dominate the skyline.

THE HAUNTED BRUSH AT WAKEFIELD THEATRE ROYAL AND OPERA HOUSE - Wakefield, West Yorkshire

Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House, West Yorkshire

There has been a theatre on this site since 1776 and the current building which was designed by acclaimed Victorian architect Frank Matcham is well known for its abundance of ghost sightings and eerie occurrences. From the figure of a man in white frilled shirt and black bow tie and a Victorian lady in a red velvet dress to the sound of footsteps and the rearrangement of furniture.
Source Ghosts UK

I once did an investigation at the theatre many years ago when I was just starting out as an investigator. Only two things stuck out in my mind. One was, why is there a skinny BBC news reporter following me, I never figured that one out. And two, why was I waving a gauss meter about.

"I found an energy is it spirit?"

I was stood right in the top circle with my trusted sceptical friend Toby. The EMF meter was pulsating, the needle was going off the scale every few seconds, puzzled, I scratched my head, what would cause that? I stood quietly for a moment looking around, the lights were all on at this point; I happened to look down at the stage, there was a guy sweeping up on stage, everytime his brush hit the surface of stage the meter would go off. Static caused by friction. The man was creating some sort of static electric charge vortex (a spirit lol), maybe it was the shape of the building, being circular and all that. Toby was ecstatic LOL!! Demystified!

HOLD YA COLLAR NEVER SWALLER TIL ITS OUT O SIGHT - GHOSTS OF THE FEVER HOSPITAL - Ossett, West Yorkshire

Investigating the area of Mitchell Laithes treatment works (Yorkshire Water Land)

The ruins of a TB (Fever) hospital and temporary psychiatric hospital.

Continued on page 2 here

After hearing many strange disembodied voices whilst walking the dog around the area of Mitchell Laithes which is situated in the Kirklees area of West Yorkshire, we thought we would go back.

The land is owned by Yorkshire Water and is a treatment works.

Important Geophysical Survey

In 2010 Heritage consultants - Northern Archaeological Associates (NAA) undertook an archaeological excavation in advance of the expansion of the treatment works. Radiocarbon dated material that was found at the site was dated to the second quarter of the forth millennium BC. Also, early Neolithic, early Bronze age, Iron Age and Roman periods.
"The remains of an early Bronze Age round barrow covering small pits containing the cremated remains of three individuals was revealed within the centre of the excavated area. One burial was accompanied by a small pottery accessory vessel and another by the cremated remains of a bone bead or toggle. An outlying burial, consisting of a cremation within the remains of an inverted Collared Urn, was recovered from a small pit nearby. All these burials produced calibrated radiocarbon dates within the range 1920-1680BC". Read more HERE

We had heard voices and our whistles sounded like they were imitated when no one else was about, not that we could see anyway, it's a lonely old place so obviously there could have been another dog walker calling to his or her dog out of eye shot, or maybe it could have simply been a bird, but it didn't sound like a bird.

This area used to have old railway station, a fever hospital and colliery, all now demolished, except for the old railway tunnel that has just been recently renovated for the new Sustrans cycle network. All that remains of the old hospital and its morgue is piles of bricks, crumbling stone walls, concrete and metal rods for reinforced concrete, small holes leading down underground, a cellar entrance, old street lamps with the tops ripped off, all set amongst the woodland and fields, which is kind of creepy I have to say!

Is it not surprising that people believe spirits linger down here, people generally link creepy old ruins and buildings with ghosts for whatever reason.

One ex-local resident who spoke to us, he remembered the tunnel
"It was very spooky and went on forever, you never thought you would reach the end" well this is an exaggeration, it is not a long tunnel and you can see the end both ways from the middle".

Well actually you can see from one end to the other quite easily.

Note: Trying to contact or recording spirits using electronic devices is generally classed by sceptics as pseudo-scientific. Equally so divination, using Ouija boards and planchettes.

We had recorded a clear EVP, it sounded like a female whispering after we speak, it sounded very much like "I don't think so" unfortunately the file has disappeared off my hardrive. I could stamp on my own head!

Note: Human beings are hard-wired to hear human type voices.

If you don't think you have much history in your area, delve a little deeper, you never know what you may find!! But please remember linking ghost to history is an assumptive approach.

"There were two types of horse drawn ambulances coming out of the old fever hospital...one green one white...the green ones carried the infectious patients, the village children would shout as the green one went past"..

"Hold ya collar, never swaller (swallow), til its out o sight"

After I wrote this entry, I became aware of local paranormal groups investigating here. I could have confabulated the whole thing, (I didn't) just to show how oral tradition or ghost-lore can spiral out of control within a community, which in-fact does happen a lot!

We did genuinely hear some odd things though.

Is it haunted?

Eyewitness stories:
Vicky said...
"I've lived on Woodburn Avenue all my life and used to jump over the beck at the bottom to play in the ruins of the Old Hospital. One day a friend and I were sat at the top of the path that runs straight up from the area that was a mortuary, suddenly something came round the corner at the far end of the path. It looked like what I can only describe as an old woman in a long dark grey coat and dark hat. I say 'floated' because 'she' came round the corner far too smoothly to have walked and as I looked at the bottom of her coat I could see no feet! The figure just stopped at the bottom end of the path. There was no dog with it which is strange as it isn't the type of place people go alone. My friend and I were so panicked by what we had seen that we ran straight back home.
Fozzy said..." My dad used to have an auntie who worked as a cleaner at the hospital and has told him of the time she went into the morgue to clean and had the fright of her life when one of the suposedly dead bodies sat up!! my dads family lived not far from the hospital and quie a few times they have opened the hallway door in the house to find one of the patients from the hospital trying on the shoes! we also own the smallholding off pildacre lane and have seen and heard unusual things many too numerous to go through here".

Other places of interest around the area
Earlsheaton tunnel has re-opened, it's been closed since 1962 its now under construction and part of the new sustrans cycle network, I have to say its pretty creepy down there, well it would be it is a cold dark dank tunnel.

Ossett History

Thank you!! for all the wonderful comments, I am amazed that so many people and residents have contacted me over the last few years regarding this area. The old Earlsheaton railway tunnel is getting re-opened for the new Sustrans cycle path and walkway.

CHASED TO THE PUB BY THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN - Thornhill Hall, West Yorkshire

THORNHILL HALL, RECTORY PARK, DEWSBURY, WEST YORKSHIRE

Remains of Thornhill Hall

This is local legend, I'm not sure how accurate this story is as it was passed down to me personally by someone who was in the pub at the time when this happened. One night back in the mid 1980's a local man was walking through the Rectory Park and ruined Thornhill Hall near Dewsbury, when he was set upon by a man on a black horse, the rider had no head! He ran like hell and the headless horseman galloped after him and then it just disappeared. The man ran to the nearest public house for safety, still hysterical with fear and fright, babbling uncontrollably, crying in-front of a pub full of people he recounted what he had just seen. That's as much of the story I know, but it is a very well known account of an alleged haunting manifestation in the area.

History
The former hall is a moated medieval manor house of archaeological importance.

Thornhill was the seat of the Savile family in the 14th - 17th century. The hall was built around 1450 and comprised a stone built manor with moat and gatehouse in its own park, which was redeveloped around 1600. Immediately to the north of the island is the site of a 17th century bowling green while to the west lie three earthwork terraces which are probably the remains of a formal garden of the later hall.

During the Civil War, in August 1648, troops of Lady Anne Savile defended the hall against the Parliamentarians, but were forced to surrender and the hall was accidentally blown up and destroyed.

Today, the site is largely overgrown and the only visible remains are the moat, part of the fireplace and front wall, two damaged statues which may have been on a gatehouse plus loose stones from the former buildings. The remains are grade 2 listed and currently classed as 'at risk' by English Heritage and the site, moat, former bowling green and site of the formal gardens are a scheduled ancient monument.

Eyewitness account
Another local resident who I have met personally, recounted the story of when he allegedly saw Richard Beaumont with his own eyes, sat on a horse, down by Black Dicks temple, he is adamant that what he saw was black dick himself. Now, human memory is totally unreliable, I am not saying he didn't see it or has embellished this story over the years, as it happened a long time ago, but what he said was very convincing. But, the brain has a good ability to fill in the gaps. What he could have seen is just a man on a black horse nothing more nothing less (Occam's razor). He is now researching about him and has now become an investigator of the paranormal because of his experience.

Footnote: Witness testimony Retelling old experiences can lead to confabulation, the experiencer should immediately record or write down exactly what they saw. Getting a witness soon after their experience is important (paranormal investigators)

HORSE DRAWN AMBULANCES AND FLOATING FIGURES - A visit the Mitchell Laithes Hospital ruins, Ossett, West Yorkshire.

MITCHELL LAITHES RECCE

Photo - circa 1969,  Hospital opened in 1890 and was demolished in the early  1970s

Read information about ML in my next post here

Mitchell Laithes now lies within reach of the general populace but in the 1800s it was 'in the sticks'. Betty Goodwin was admitted to the hospital with scarlet fever and remembers being intimidated by its location - 'it seems like another world from my home'. Maggie Eccles was a student nurse there - ' oh the isolation and the hard work!' It's hardly surprising that people came down with these diseases, the River Calder was so polluted that a local writer described it as 'little better than a sewer'.

Tuberculosis, or TB for short, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. In years gone by it used to be called the 'consumption'. In the late 1800s belief in the restorative powers of fresh air was common. Once germ theory became accepted and TB was understood to be contagious, sanatoria became the primary method of treatment for active TB cases. Sanatoria were intended to be places where TB patients were quarantined to prevent the spread of the disease, and places where they could rest, get fresh air and have good food. This 'rest cure' was the main philosophy behind sanatoria treatments in the 1910s and 20s.

Some of the locals I've spoken to think that the hospital was also the local 'nut house' which I find rather derogatory but anyhow..as some patients had been spotted wandering the village. I am not sure if this is true or not, but somewhere along the lines there would have been patients with mental issues.

TB Hospital ruins

4pm to 5pm 12 Feb 2013

We re-visited Mitchell Laithes fever hospital ruins once again.

Equipment: Canon Legria FS200
Olympus DW-90 digital voice recorder.

(Simplified), what you will hear is me talking  to my partner, about the area we are in and visa versa, chatting about the history and the people. We pause with quiet intermissions in conversation to see if we record anything unusual.

We have had on occasion recorded whispers as if something is butting into our conversations, so we tend to do this now, we never assume that they are spirits of the dead.

I placed our Canon digital camcorder on that pile of bricks 'in the picture above' and just left it rolling. We were stood a good 10 feet away from it. Generally I prefer just to leave a camera rolling on its own (automated) and get out of the area (remotely) not to contaminate it, but in this instance we couldn't.

There was quite a bit of extraneous noise as was expected mid afternoon, but I sometimes think night vigils are nonsensical, you are setting yourself up for misperception.

We didn't hear anything unusual on the voice recorder.

In the first video at 1:27 a strange clicking noise was heard, we couldn't rationalize this, it sounds very close to the camera, you can hear us chatting in the distance. I thought it might be something hitting the camera from above, or an internal mechanism, there appears to be a dip in sound (pressure) but I've never heard  it do this before. I have added an additional video explaining what I think the sound 'sounds like' not that it is this, as I explain, the camera was flush on a brick. It would be impossible for the SD card cover to open on its own. I don't know what this sound is, it is more than likely mechanical.

Conclusion: Internal mechanism, unknown.

http://julesparanormaltour.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/ossett-west-yorkshire.html

I applied a suggestion (by anonymous) regarding the sound, I set the camera recording again and opened the back of the SD slot (as above) the sound is completely different, so it must have been an internal mechanism, if not, I have no idea what that clicking sound was.

THE HIGHWAYMAN OF OSSETT - West Yorkshire

THE HIGHWAYMAN OF OSSETT, THE RED LION INN.

The Red Lion is allegedly one of the oldest inns in Ossett, it is reputedly haunted by the ghost of a traveller or highwayman who hanged himself in one of the bedrooms.  Blind Jack of Knaresborough surveyed parts of the highway which dates as far back as the 1700s.  It used to sit on the Dewsbury/Wakefield road, which was once part of the Wakefield/Halifax turnpike or toll road.  The road is roman in origin.

Robert Chappell (1795-1864), Ossett Highwayman
Born in Ossett in 1795, Robert Chappell became notorious as a thief and highwayman. It was said that his crimes were more numerous than those of Dick Turpin, but not as serious. Unlike Turpin, Chappell didn't murder anyone, but it was said that in local Petty and Quarter Sessions his name was as familiar as a household word and that conviction had followed conviction almost as soon as he had been released from the prison gates.
In 1835, he was saved from transportation to Australia and instead given six months hard labour in Wakefield's House of Correction.
The House of Correction was established in the 1590s by George Saville as a place of detention and not punishment. The original site was at Northgate, Wakefield.
